16 Concrete advice for successful implementation

Below we share experiences that have been tried and that work!


1. Appoint a strategy project manager with overall responsibility (often a freed person)

2. Appoint a Must-Win Battle leader for each Must-Win Battle, who is responsible for the progress of each Must-Win Battle and who reports to the strategy project leader (can be people from the management or key people who are passionate about the task)

3.Involve external sparring partneras needed , who supports and helps either face-to-face or on-line.

4. Formalize a strategy steering group to coordinate and plan among themselves (often composed of the overall strategy project manager and each Must-Win Battle manager)

5. Designate activity managers to be responsible for each activity (can be people from management or key people who are passionate about the task)

6. Establish working groups for each activity (put together the right team)

7. Describe measurement points for each Must-Win Battle (if you have not already done so) so that you have something concrete to measure progress on

8. Establish a fixed follow-up structure that aligns with other management and board meetings

9.Align agendas at management, board and staff meetings so that the strategy and associated Must-Win Battles and activities are planned and spoken about

10. Involve the Board (status and progress)

11. Plan and implement ongoing communication including to whom, how and how often

12. Incorporate Must-Win Battles and other relevant topics from the strategy into job descriptions etc.

13. Identify skills development needs of staff in relation to the strategy and associated activities

14. Prepare graphic presentations that show the strategy in an easy and clear way. Use your own templates or apply templates in the MakeMyStrategy™ platform

15. The activities in an action plan can sometimes be very general, and therefore it is recommended that you draw up a detailed action plan for each activity as necessary so that it is clear WHO DOES WHAT

16. Finally, your persistence must continue in execution. Indeed, constant follow-up is crucial. Use your own methods or apply templates in the MakeMyStrategy™ platform.
