Traction comes from the automotive industry and is about anti-spin regulation – in other words, an electronic function on cars that prevents the wheels from spinning, thus improving the propulsion.
But it is also a word used more and more by investors and entrepreneurs. As an entrepreneur, you go through a process from idea to business plan, business model, strategy to execution and growth. It is a process filled with many tasks at the same time.
When an investor enters a company at this early stage, the investor looks for "traction" – that is, the entrepreneur's ability to create momentum so far. Traction thus refers in business contexts to the fact that an entrepreneur has begun to prove that one can conquer a given market or customer segment.
