It is the consulting firm McKinsey that is behind the 7 S model – developed by Tom Peters. The main purpose of this model is to identify which levers the company can do organisationally/internally to ensure optimum performance.
In the model there are 7 areas to be elucidating. The point is that the 7 areas mutually affect each other in a positive synergy effect. The model thus helps to spot where to intervene in relation to the wishes and goals of the company.
The 7 areas are
Strategy: The purpose of the company and thus also the strategy to be followed in order to gain competitive advantages
Structure: Structure/structure of the organisation
Systems: Procedures in the company and resource allocation
Shared Values: Company Values
Staff: Employees of the company
Skills: the company's core competence and thus resources, skills and capabilities
Style: The management style used
Some of the 7 areas are easier to change than others. A rule of thumb is that the "hard" areas such as strategy, structure and systems are more straightforward to change compared to the "soft" areas such as shared values, staff, skills and style. Therefore, you should be aware to devote the necessary time and resources to the execution of the detected changes.
